Similarly, preachers and pedagogues bear the task of the prophets and apostles, but after the advent of Muhammad - peace be upon him - preachers became the bearers of the mission, regardless of their job or place of work and the conditions of their lives, and they are the bearers of the message at all times and everywhere, preachers - men and women - spread the divine guidance they learned from the word of God; so that justice and peace would be established and Allah’s vicegerency on Earth as ordained by the Almighty, is attained.
The authentic wellspring for every preacher is the Holy Quran, the speech of the Lord of the Worlds to His servants, guides them to which is most right, it fortifies in them the instinct of good they were imprinted by, grows in them goodness and righteousness, and invites them to render Satan as their archenemy and dispel its whispers that upend the sons of Adam in the torment of the blazing fire in the Hereafter.
Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Quran
“Verily this Qur'an doth guide to that which is most right (or stable), and giveth the Glad Tidings to the Believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a magnificent reward” “Al Isra- Chapter.
Precious lessons in An- Nur Chapter
An-Nur chapter obscures blindness, and saves insightful people from going astray, and this might be the significance of its name, mediated between the Two chapters Al Mu’minoun and Al Furqan, which is a miraculous rank and arrangement among Al Quran Chapters! It came to link the light symbolizing truth and metaphorically God’s light to the heavens and the earth, as if it delineates the path of guidance and its shining thin line between the earth and the heavens, in order to be able to apprehend its content, and the divine message propounded, where we may recall and realize the secret of happiness and reward of righteousness that conforms to human instinct:
“A sura which We have sent down and which We have ordained in it have We sent down Clear Signs, in order that ye may receive admonition.” (An- Nur chapter:1)
The verses of this chapter were revealed in Medina following the immigration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and if we summoned this fact from the beginning, we would recognize the characteristics of the verses and aspects of guidance towards the legislation, and manners governing the Islamic society, which is a role model for every human community that eyes civilization and transcendence; whereby it seizes the subjects, follows the means and innovates to remedy the ailments in the target environment, or to instill values and promote virtues and morals, thence I see the necessity of investing this chapter and the context of its introduction to be present rich educational perspectives the educator should be aware of and discovers from the miraculous words, and put them to the community through educational methods observed by the Prophecy, in line with using the modern techniques and all the means appropriate to the addressee or intended for advocacy and education.
The chapter declares in its unfamiliar inception that all its verses are imposed obligations, in a direct decisive manner, simplifies its subject in a strong way that draws attention to the extent of attention to values and ethics, obligations and punishable penalties, and the extent of this relationship to the true doctrine; as the direct imperatives constitute a form of divine instruction.
“[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.” An-Nur chapter :1
The educating preacher communicates to people the meanings of imperative and obligatory, and correlates them with examples of the daily life of an individual or society, intimidates the people against consequences of transgression, and motivates them to seek the reward in the worldly life before the Hereafter.
Given the human soul is the first nucleus of society, the family is the first incubator, and the secret of the quality of this dangerous offspring; the chapter starts addressing the ambience that generates the soul, within which ideas, conceptions, perceptions and beliefs are built up, which in turn render the deeds, and ethics. Aren’t our ethics are only the produce of our thoughts?! Inevitably, What a heart revers is mirrored in the deeds of the senses and body parts, for what it seems to be misconduct and transgression that anger the Almighty, punishments in the worldly life and in the Hereafter are imposed for.
On all appearances, An-Nur chapter seems to be of a legislative subject, but in fact based on the integrity of the heart, so if the heart is filled with faith and peace it will survive, and here the preacher invests this wide range to purge the hearts and purifies the souls, to enjoy what is licit and allowed (halal), declaring that the Halal circle is wider, and that it is easier and more purified, it is the best, where people transcend when they taste the Quranic text, and meditate its limits and goals.
Efforts of reformists to stand up against mischief makers:
What is the punishment of adultery, hatred of the perpetrator, and the removal of adulterers from the Muslim group are meant for but for the protection of society?! The chapter then tackles the exclusion of married couples from this punishment and they can be separated by the sworn allegation of adultery. It also covers the “Ifk Incidents”, which abounds in weighty morals and lessons. All of these key points motivate the educator to invest in these societal incidents, creatively referring to people's reactions when the wind of corruption blows, how they deal with it, how to authenticate the truth, and that the distinction is inevitable by a divine decision between malicious man and malicious woman, as well as between the virtuous man and the virtuous woman, where at the end the Lord creates a pure society that is blessed with the Almighty’s satisfaction, and beautiful gifts.
It may be necessary for preachers – across the nation - to address the efforts of mischief makers that endeavor to extirpate Islam and human values from the societies, and work with all their energies to spread obscenities and advocate vices, for the purposes manifested by Quran in many parts:
“Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.” An-Nur Chapter- 19.
Through this chapter in particular and the Qur'an in general, the meditator is aware of the forms of crimes, atrocities, sins and obscenities, and the Qur'an teaches him- if he contemplates its texts- how to protect himself, to avoid the causes of temptation, and to stay away from all that may expose him to evil, which is the wise act for those who observe the Lord’s rules. This is what a preacher must instill in the minds and mentality of people, by employing effective communication skills.
Educating people to observe clandestineness and chasteness:
The wise educator should elaborate when training the young people on the skills of permission, which the chapter presents to show people the seriousness of the matter, and illuminate the means of prevention, elucidating that problems and misfortunes of many families happened only because of breaching these ethics and their failure to raise their children on the enlightening Quranic guidance!!
Lowering the gaze, and forbidding showing ornamentation except for male escorts are urgent human necessity, especially in societies where the display of charms has become a kind of kindness, modernity and openness promoted through the vast virtual space, without limits and restrictions, reaching every individual without hindrance. All of these can only be quelled by self-censorship that is instilled by an experienced educator, at a time when the pious official and loyal leaders are absent.
Calling for the marriage of singles is one of the means of prevention, which the preacher is in charge of spreading among the people, so that everyone is familiar with it and become a commendable culture with a form that guarantees rights. Do not push girls into prostitution, do not spread vice, and do not breach the limits.
Just as the Qur'an diagnosed the aberrations and what we should observe when deviation occurs, it also brought forth prevention schemes as a pre-emptive phase; he addressed and prescribed the remedy that may not be loved for the human soul, and this methodology of Quranic education, should be adopted by believers to overcome crises, and delivered by nimble educators to promote higher-order thinking skills: from finding solutions to problems, and decision-making, and other terms prevailed among people of human development and modern education.
All are preventive reasons to ensure chastity in the world of conscience and feeling, and push the effects that arouses the sense, and strain the nerves of virtuous people who are resisting temptation and seduction.
Coupling faith and behavior:
The Chapter moves on to describe the purist family homes and its members:
[Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn -about (An Nur: 37)
This links for the pensive man the idea of faith and the nature of behavior. What is more beautiful that the preacher invests this text to link one's actions to the nature of his heart, which can’t be steadfast only by effort, sedulity and care !! It is beautiful that the educator would generate creatively practical ideas motivating the training of hearts and the settlement of souls!!
Then the verses draw the attention of the preacher to a feasible scientific approach, such as striking analogy, examining the bad models and reflect on the outcome of the lesson, it is a wondrous educational method that simulates the subconscious mind to figure out the prospects, from reality, describes the case if exceeded the limits:
“But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account.” An-Nur -39.
It may be necessary for preachers and educators, to teach people the features of the hypocrite character to fear in themselves, including the lack of discipline and morality of believers and their tastes, which the world is observing under the pretext of etiquette and civilization. Revering pious figures, scholars and righteous leadership is a lesson derived from the verses of the chapter. The verses called for being humble before the Apostle of Allah - peace be upon him - in obedience and trial. Hence the preachers must invest and count on these perspectives; as how to discipline the sincere believer and how to make him obey and how obedience will be ?! This understanding will be achieved only by the efforts of scholars and preachers, and I believe that the nation of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is in the middle between this and that, the achievement of understanding resulted in good application, thus the promise of Allah becomes reality.
“Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that - then those are the defiantly disobedient.” (An-Nur 55-56)
In conclusion, when preachers observe the end of the chapter in an educational way this is rendered as a smart skill, such as the skill of comprehension and reflection, and their ability to present the secrets of the Chapter and reflect the text on the real life be way of prudence and sagaciousness.
Preachers can never find a purest book that abounds in sublimity as the book of Allah if they are sincere and seek His refuge.
